In 2013, Wendy Davis rose to national prominence after thousands of people watched her 13-hour filibuster of a Texas law that was designed with the specific intent of forcing abortion providers to close their doors.

Although the filibuster successfully killed the bill, Republicans passed it in a special session five days later. In the following three years, over half the clinics in Texas shut down, creating immense obstacles for Texas women in need of reproductive healthcare. In June 2016, the Supreme Court struck the law down, declaring it unconstitutional.
