Hello #ChangeMakers!

While we’ve had a few setbacks this week — the confirmations of Betsy DeVos, Jeff Sessions and Tom Price right up there at the top of the list — we’ve also shown that we aren’t going to back down in the face of hard fights. And we’ve shown that, even if we lose, we aren’t going to go quietly into the night.Watching the silencing of Senator Elizabeth Warren on the Senate floor this week as she attempted to read a letter from civil rights leader Coretta Scott King, I couldn’t help but reflect on my own experience in the Texas Senate when fighting against attempts to pass a sweeping anti-abortion bill in my state. Like Senator Warren, I was warned. I was given an explanation. And, because of your help, I persisted.

That’s the point I want to leave you with this week. As elected officials, we are never alone in these fights. And, we are never successful without the support of our colleagues and, most importantly, the people that we represent. My 13 hour filibuster in Texas became known as “The People’s Filibuster” and rightly so. Because it wasn’t the bullying I experienced that made that day stand out. It was the fact that I was joined by so many of you - either in person or on-line from your dorm rooms, living rooms and offices throughout the country.

Advancing our interests is a team sport, particularly in a climate as tough as the one we are in right now. You have been a vital part of making sure that Elizabeth Warren is provided with the very microphone that she and her Democratic colleagues use to speak on our behalf. You vote, you have been making phone calls, showing up at legislative offices and marching under signs that express your values. And it is because of you#ChangeMakers, that our values will ultimately be represented and heard.

I am so proud to be a part of this team with you!  Because though you, too, have been warned. And though you, too, have been given explanations as to why your expectations won’t be met. #YouPersist! Keep it up you amazing fighters, you! This fight is far, far from being over.

xo,
- Wendy

This week’s #ChangeMaker: Elizabeth Warren

"She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.” This week’s #ChangeMaker is the U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, Elizabeth Warren. Warren has been a tireless fighter for causes near and dear to us. In her recent battle against the confirmation of Jeff Sessions for Attorney General, Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell silenced Warren and then tried to explain his behavior by articulating the above quoted words. Since then, #LetLizSpeak has become one of the highest trending hashtags on Twitter, an expression of our collective objection to the silencing of our voices through the elected representatives who speak for us. A special tip of the hat and thanks to Senator Kamala Harris who turned them into a viral series of empowering pictures, highlighting women who have persisted throughout history to fight for our rights.

Know a hero making a difference in their community? Send us a picture of someone you’d like to see as #ChangeMaker of the week here, along with their story, and you might just see it in the next Deeds Digest. Either way, it helps to spread the love and empowerment. (Don’t forget to tag our page so we see your nomination!)

One thing feminists are great at is taking what’s thrown at them as fuel for the fire. Check out how, thanks to Senator Harris’ help, the voice of oppression became the new slogan of resistance!

It’s exhausting to #Resist each and every day, but your phone calls, emails, and protests are making a difference. Keep it up, #ChangeMakers!

Melissa McCarthy’s laugh-until-you-cry impersonation of Sean Spicer is more than a political spoof. It highlights the irony of gender roles in multiple arenas and we applaud her for it!

While dangerous policies are threatening women’s reproductive rights, activists are joining together to fight harmful legislation with proactive legislation of our own.

It’s tough to aspire to becoming something that you can’t see. This week, Jess Herbst came out as the first openly transgender mayor in Texas helping to pave the way for others in our home state to believe that they can do the same because of her courage and openness - and that is a beautiful thing.

If you missed the Superbowl, you might be able to catch a replay of the game on TV. If you missed this incredible statement from Audi about the importance of gender pay equity to #DriveProgress, you can watch it here.

Loved it as much as we did? Here are some more of our favorite advertisements that made a social statement.

Can’t get through to your senator? You’re not the only one. While calling is the most effective way to reach your representative, here are some alternate ways of getting through faster than a letter:

  1. Send a Fax. Use this site to send five free faxes a day.

  2. Send a Pizza. No, we’re not joking... Well, we’re sort of joking, but read about the Utah woman that did just that!

  3. Keep calling! Even if you can’t get through, “the ever-ringing phone has changed legislators’ minds about what the American people want.

With so many threats to our reproductive health, it’s hard to keep track. Interested in resisting strategically in your state? Use Rewire’s Legislative Tracker to search “laws, people, organizations involving sexual and reproductive health” to help focus your fight.

This week, we’re focusing on long-term reproductive health legislation. Want to #DO something about reproductive health in your backyard?

Kill One Bill

Where to start:

  • Use Rewire’s Legislative Tracker above to learn more about the specific reproductive health legislation in your state, and choose one bill you want to fight:

    • Look for a bill listed as "Proposed". That means it’s not too late to block it!

    • Read about who authored the legislation, who supports it, and what current organizations are working to fight for women’s rights so you can support their work in the long term!

    • Use the ‘Topics’ listed to the right to come up with your argument about why you think this legislation is harmful to people in your state!

Who to call:
