Hello #ChangeMakers!

Can you believe the election is finally here??? I know that many of us are feeling a bit fatigued because of an election season that feels like it’s been going on forever, but I hope you also feel the same sense of excitement that I’m experiencing.

We have a tremendous opportunity to elevate the issues we care about – affordable higher education, pay equality, lifting the minimum wage, reproductive freedoms, family leave and affordable child care – just to name a few. Honestly, I couldn’t wait to cast my ballot. And so I did so on the very first day of early voting in my home state of Texas.

If you haven’t voted yet (or registered), Rock the Vote has more information about where to vote in your area and whether you are still able to register in your state. The good news is, your generation is registered in record numbers! Check out what that looks like.

And remember that this election is bigger than who will become our next President. We have an opportunity to make sure that we play a role in changing the face of power at every level of government – from school boards to city councils to state legislatures. Did you know that only a fifth of the largest US cities are led by women mayors and a mere six of 50 states are governed by women? In state legislatures, women occupy less than a quarter of House seats and only one fifth of Senate seats. The list goes on…

Regardless of whether your candidate of choice is a Republican, Democrat or Independent, I hope you’ll take the opportunity to vote with gender equality top of mind. That means electing women who align with us on the issues we care about and bring with them the unique experience of what it means to be a woman in America.

It also means supporting the work of our friends at Ignite National and She Should Run who are working tirelessly to ensure that the faces of our candidates and therefore, officeholders, look more like all of us the next time around. In the meantime, we must elect strong male allies too who support the decisions we make for ourselves.

Now’s our chance, #ChangeMakers! Let’s all commit to voting for our mothers, daughters, sisters and ourselves. YOU are amazing! And I’m so grateful for where you are taking this country.

xo,
- Wendy

This week’s #ChangeMaker is you, millenial! You’re registered in record numbers. If you all show up at the polls, check out what that could look like. Our future is in your hands and you have more power than you think. This newsletter is to help you realize that, so we want to make sure you’re represented! Upload a picture of a friend you’d like to see as #ChangeMaker of the week to Facebook along with their story, and you might just see it in the next Deeds Digest. Either way, it helps to spread the love and empowerment. (Don’t forget to tag our page so we see your nomination!)

We see fewer women in public office because there are fewer women on our ballots. See below what you can ‘Do’ to change that!

The great Sandra Day O’Connor warns Cosmo readers that the percentage of women who voted in the last presidential election dropped 2% from 2008 to 2012. Time to turn that statistic upside down!

We all know maternity leave is important. Did you know paternity leave is also one of the most pressing issues facing women? Nev from MTV’s Catfish explains why.

Our friends at Ignite National help break down the issues at pre-teen and teen levels so you can empower your sisters, cousins, daughters and nieces to become the next generation of women voters.

Tired of having others speak for you? In many states, you can vote on issues directly via ballot initiatives. The American Association for University Women breaks down the measures affecting women and girls the most.

This nifty ballot calculator by PollVault makes it super simple to find out which candidates support reproductive justice in your area! Take the pledge to #VoteProChoice.
