The Newsletter of the Deeds Not Words Community

Hello #ChangeMakers!

This Thursday, we’re seeing purple. Yes, it’s one of our favorite colors at Deeds Not Words, but I’m wearing purple today in honor of #PurpleThursday, to raise awareness for National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This is  an issue to which many of us, even those experiencing it, often turn a blind eye. As our friends at the National Domestic Violence Hotline remind us, however, we have a responsibility “to see DV.” 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. And while the problem is large, it’s not always obvious. DV takes various forms, from coercive behavior to emotional manipulation, so not all of its victims are visibly black and blue.

Today on #PurpleThursday, individuals and organizations across the country -- including me and hopefully, you! -- are wearing purple as a visual reminder to look out for those in our lives who might be silently suffering. In the words of President Obama, by doing so “we shine a light on this violation of the basic human right to be free from violence and abuse, pledge to ensure every victim of domestic violence knows they are not alone, and foster supportive communities that help survivors seek justice and enjoy full and healthy lives.”  Of note, we also wear this color in honor of #SpiritDay to protest the bullying of our young LGBTQ community who also deserve our respect and protection.

These issues – protecting survivors of domestic violence and protecting against LGBTQ bullying in our schools – formed an important part of my work in the Texas legislature.  I am pleased to continue that work in partnership with you, my fellow #ChangeMakers.   And I’m anxious to share survivor stories with you as inspiration for what all of us can overcome and achieve.

So read up below on what you can do to help reduce violence in homes across our country, and make sure you hug someone today! I know you feel as I do that if we lay a hand on one another, it should be with love.  Much love to you, #ChangeMakers.

xo,
- Wendy
