Welcome To Our First Deeds Digest

Hello my fellow #ChangeMakers! And welcome to the Deeds Digest -- a place where you will find curated content that I hope will inform, motivate and plant a few seeds of inspiration leading you to consider ways that you, too, might become a greater part of moving us toward a more gender equal world. At the age of 53, and though I am fully ensconced in trying to fulfill my own obligation in helping us to create that reality, I find that I continually draw encouragement from learning about what other women are doing to confront and break down the barriers that we face. What amazing, indefatigable people we are!

Each week, you'll also meet a fellow "Changemaker" that we we'll be highlighting in hopes that her work will provide you with some ideas of your own.

This week's #ChangeMaker is 44-year-old Mahsa Torabi. On April 9th, she became the first woman to ever publicly finish a marathon in Iran. Her simple deed - running a marathon as a woman in a country often hostile to women's rights - was truly inspiring. She had to begin her trek at 6AM, hours before the 250 men. Read more about her victory lap against discrimination here!

Please keep sending us examples of women who motivate you in your everyday world so that we can lift them up as examples as well.

Thank you for being you, for all that you have to offer the world, and for your belief that each of us has a role to play in shaping the world we want to see.

#TexasWomenForever

Some of America's fiercest (and funniest) advocates for women's reproductive rights gathered for a fundraiser for my home state. Thank you to my friend Lizz Winstead, comedians Sarah Silverman and Amy Schumer, and many more for raising over $53,000 for choice! (MSNBC)

Lena Dunham and Thoughts on Feminism

Only the fabulous Lena Dunham could make a cheeky video that incorporates Beyoncé, suffragettes in petticoats, and nipple tape as a challenge to embrace and support our fellow feminists.

A Conversation About Transgender Representation in Pop Culture

Our friends at Bitch Media wrote this awesome story about how the recently increased representation of the transgender community in the media helps to educate all of us - from Janet Mock to Caitlyn Jenner to Jazz Jennings.

Marie Claire's profile of providers risking their careers for their patience seeking critical medical services, including abortions in hostile states, is worth the read.

Focusing on the Equal Rights Amendment will push the needle farther than discussing whether or not unshaved armpit hair makes a stand for feminism. (Huffington Post)
The U.S. Senate got it right this time when they unanimously approved a bill designed to protect the rights of sexual assault victims (NY Times)
Check out this insightful look at how a couple of young African American women determined whether or not they needed to attend a historically black college. (Women's News)
Alarming news this week, as an Oklahoma Court has asserted an archaic view on sexual assault by ruling that forced oral sex does not constitute rape if the victim is unconscious from intoxication. (Marie Claire)
