Happy New Year, #Changemakers!

Not to be cliche, but I’ll start us off with an overused adage “New Year, New Us”— but don’t worry, we’re not shifting too much. We’re really focusing this year on our organizational values rooted in proactive anti-racism and gender justice.

We grew a lot last year— from restructuring our board to shifting our policy goals into ones that are more reflective of the people we work alongside and serve. And now… we’re getting ready to walk the walk by re-launching our electoral program! As we enter a crucial midterm election year, we’re letting YOUth lead by hiring a new team to help manage our field programs and expanding our civic engagement efforts. We want to make sure that we stay true to our name and show up to elect people that hold the same intersectional core values we do, to represent Texans accurately.

The pandemic, snowpocalypse, anti-abortion bills becoming law, and the fight against trans lives have not only made us incredibly angry but have made us question our future and purpose as an organization. How can we continue to advocate for policy solutions if our efforts fall on deaf ears? Shifting the balance of power in Texas to reflect its increasing diversity – from who speaks up, to who votes and who governs – must begin by lifting up the power, voice, and leadership of young people in our state, particularly our BIPOC youth.

So here are our New Year's Resolutions!

🌟 We’re going to register 10,000 new voters this year. Voters that can help us shape the equitable future that we envision.

🌟 We’re being intentional in our organizing tactics by leaning on youth advocates on the ground to create the strategy that will yield the changes you want to see in your community. Therefore, we’re hiring 10 new student regional organizers to drive our field strategy.

🌟 We’re holding ourselves and our elected officials accountable. Not aligned with our vision? Bye ✌️ Don’t like the way we message around the issues we care about? Bye ✌️ In 2022 we will not be apologizing for sticking to our values.

🌟 We’re growing our art program! Art is a powerful tool that can bring communities together and inspire them to act on important issues, so we are shifting how policy is consumed and understood by incorporating more art to tell stories, raise awareness, and inspire action for young Texans.

If these resolutions align with your 2022 goals, get involved with our team! We’re looking for Regional Organizers and a Field Manager to make our resolutions into reality. You can find these opportunities here. Don’t forget to also keep up with our Instagram for more ways to plug into our work this year.

Let's take on this year like the powerful #Changemakers we are!

Food Insecurity on College Campuses Is the Focus of Market Boxx

People are often surprised by how old Makayla Williams and Alexis Wray are. “There’s always so much shock that we started something so young, but I think that’s the thing that works for us.” For people who know them well, it’s no surprise that these young advocates started a nonprofit while they were still undergrads. Their organization, MarketBoxx, is designed to combat food insecurity on college campuses, where on average, more than a third of students are food insecure on a regular basis.

There's No Such Thing As A 'Pro-Life Feminist'

In co-opting feminist branding, anti-abortion activists aren’t just attempting to frame their movement as socially progressive — they’re also aligning it with a vastly more popular movement. The reality, of course, is that “pro-life feminism” is a misnomer; the two ideologies are mutually exclusive. Still, logic and other inconveniences haven’t stopped the anti-abortion movement from its pursuit of reaching young people with girl-power language and imagery and the general pink-washing of patriarchal abuse. The movement continues to grow its digital presence, particularly through ad buys and exploiting lax social media moderation.

Here’s more of what has us fired up…

#Changemaker of the Week: Amber Davis

This week's #Changemaker is our Executive Director, Amber, who has been leading our team while we've navigated this ongoing pandemic. Her leadership skills, adaptability, and deep level of care and commitment to all of our staff and students is the reason Deeds has been able to thrive over the years. Not to mention— she's a mom to two beautiful girls. Being a working mom during this pandemic has been a challenge, to say the least, but Amber has handled every moment of it like a champ. For all parents navigating these uncertain times doing the best they can to show up, we see you and we love you! Thank you for all you do for the Deeds community, Amber. 💜

We see you, Changemaker! 👏
