Hey, #Changemakers!

Welcome to the first Deeds Digest of 2020! We had an amazing year of growth here at Deeds Not Words. From celebrating the end of the year with three new full-time staff members and growing our network of Changemakers across Texas through our Campus Organizer program, to hosting our first Advocacy Day at the Capitol and launching our Movement Mujeres fellowship program — 2019 was without a doubt a year of impact. But the new year looks even brighter, Changemakers.

Here’s a recap of where we’re going

  • Registering, educating, and turning out 35,000 young voters in Texas

  • Launching our Gen CountZ Census Initiative

  • Releasing our first-ever video web series, Deeds Debunks

  • Expanding our in-house leadership programs like our Artist-in-Residence, Movement Mujeres, Internships, and more

  • Launching our first Changemaker Camp for middle school advocates

There are some big things happening at Deeds this year, and we hope we can count on your continued support — whether that’s donating whatever you can, following us on social media, or reading the Deeds Digest :)

We appreciate you, Changemakers, and we’re excited to see where 2020 takes us. Stay tuned!

In solidarity,

—Amber and Claudia
Co-Executive Directors

9 Climate Activists of Color You Should Know

There’s no doubt about it: climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time, especially for younger generations. As a result, youth climate activists have gone on strike from school, taken to the streets, disrupted major events, and lobbied members of Congress to pursue action against the biggest existential threat to humanity.

Check out how these young climate activists of color are bringing awareness to an issue that specifically threatens and affects their communities the most.

Here’s what’s also inspiring us:

It may be a new year, but anti-choice lawmakers are still up to the same old tricks: Trying to make it harder for people to get an abortion. With the fate of Roe v. Wade at the hands of the Supreme Court, a group of lawmakers on Capitol Hill — 19 of whom represent Texas — have called on the high court to revisit the ruling, which affirmed that access to safe abortion is a constitutional right over four decades ago.

Actions like these further prove fight we’re up against in 2020: Keeping Roe v. Wade upheld and protected.

Here’s what also has us fired up:

The primaries are coming…

This is your friendly reminder that there's less than ONE month to register to vote in time for the March primaries in Texas! Already registered? Cool. Tell a friend, tell a neighbor, or tell a coworker! Learn more about how to register at VoteTexas.gov đź—ł

#Changemaker of the Week:
Stephanie Villanueva

Our Changemaker of the Week goes to our Movement Mujeres Fellow, Stephanie Villanueva, who was recently selected to be a fellow for the Marisol del Carmen Rodriguez Congressional Fellowship in the Office of the Honorable Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia of Houston. Here’s Stephanie to share more about her experience:

“I'm looking forward to this opportunity because I get to serve the community that saw me grow up,” Stephanie said. “I was raised in the district Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia currently represents and being selected for this Fellowship will allow me to use my personal experiences growing up in the area to practice my passion for policy change and social justice. TX-29 is a district where about 77% of the total population is Latinx and 11% is Black, and seeing how well Congresswoman Garcia has represented communities of color throughout her career has been admirable."

We see you, Changemaker! You can follow Stephanie's congressional adventures on Twitter at @lastephanieee

We’re already coming at 2020 full throttle — from preparing to launch our 2020 Census campaign to onboarding new Campus Organizers at the end of this month, we haven’t stopped — and we hope your support won’t stop either.

If you didn’t have a chance to give during our End of Year campaign last year, we invite you to make a contribution to support the work our Changemakers will embark on in 2020.
