Hey #Changemakers,

The team at The Transgender Education Network of Texas here! 🏳️‍⚧️ We are the largest trans-led, trans-focused policy-driven organization here in Texas. TENT approaches all of our work through a racial justice lens and with an intersectional approach to ensure we are doing the work with our whole community in mind. We are similar to the Deeds fam in how we do our work by galvanizing the voices of trans Texans throughout the state to make change. We also train thousands of people yearly, from elected officials and medical providers, to schools and businesses. Being one of only a handful of organizations doing this work in the country, we work closely with municipalities and a wide range of allies to create structural change for trans people to be given the respect they deserve here in Texas. ✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿

We know that this year’s legislative session has not been easy, nor has doing this incredibly difficult work in the middle of a pandemic that just seems to be raging on.

Let’s break it down though— what has been happening on our issue?

  • The state of Texas filed the most anti-trans bills in any state legislative session, ever.
  • Close to 50 bills were filed between the regular and special session attacking LGBTQIA+ Texans.
  • Over the last 5+ years, Texas held the #1/#2 spot for the deadliest state for the trans population, with Florida being our competition.
  • Our state is also home to the second highest population of trans and gender diverse people in the country, right after California.

Whew! 😮‍💨  That was a lot to take in, but what can we do about this as #Changemakers?

We know that transphobia is rooted in racism and misogyny, and when we address and solve these issues, everyone will benefit from the equity to follow. Continuing to fight for issues like reproductive justice and equal access to voting means everyone including trans people will also benefit from those wins. We must continue to recenter the importance of a statewide non-discrimination ordinance so a trans person can’t be fired or lose their housing because they’ve been outed. In addition to this protection, one of our top legislative priorities is to outlaw trans/gay panic, meaning that when someone is attacked or killed the person who has committed that crime cannot use that they did the act based on finding out the person was trans and/or gay.

Lastly, be a good ally to trans people in every space you find yourself in. Start with practicing introducing yourself with your pronouns, ask your professor to ask for pronouns for class intros (just in time for classes starting). Follow us on social media @TransTexas to stay up to date with what’s happening in #TXLege and how to get involved.

Keep up the great work Changemakers!

In Solidarity,
The TENT Team

Welcome Back to our Campus Organizers!

As a YOUth-led organization, our campus chapters are the starting point for turning ideas into action. We are beyond proud of these Changemakers who have persevered and adapted through the challenges of the past year. Stay tuned in to our Instagram as we kick off our campus organizer training next week and introduce the students behind our 13 chapters across the state!

A Texas member of Congress is helping lead the attempt to change the rules on parental leave, for fathers as well as mothers. U.S. Rep. Colin Allred, D-Dallas, knows about the value of paid time off for new parents. He made headlines in 2019 as the first member of Congress known to take paid paternity leave. Now he's leading a national push for extending that to every parent in the country. It’s a key question for Texas’ lowest paid workers, most of them people of color and most of whom literally cannot afford to take substantial time off without pay when a baby is born.

Texas can ban common abortion procedure in second trimester, appeals court rules

In yet another attack on abortion rights and access this year in Texas, this ruling would allow state officials to ban the most common procedure used to end a pregnancy in the second trimester. The ruling paves the way for Texas to be the first state in the nation to impose such a ban. “This ban is about cutting off abortion access, and nothing else,” said Amy Hagstrom Miller, president of Whole Woman’s Health. The ruling is being challenged, along with the S.B. 8 abortion ban that goes into effect Sept. 1.

How To Support Afghan Refugees in Texas Right Now

Our friends at MOVE Texas recently shared some resources on Twitter about how to volunteer, donate, and support refugee resettlement in Texas. If you're in Houston or Fort Worth areas, click here to join the volunteer list to support services needed, like airport pick-ups, apartment set-ups, or bringing a meal. You can also donate to Refugee Services of Texas to help with doctor visits, groceries, and more. Let's give a warm Texas welcome to our new neighbors!

Are you are a teen who cannot get permission from a parent to get vaccinated? It’s important to know that you still have rights! Check out this great post from Jane's Due Process on which states and cities will allow teens to consent to their own vaccinations. Learn more about state parental consent laws here.

You can also go to vaccinefinder.org to find locations and appointments near you to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Remember— insurance and ID may be asked for but are not required. Keep yourself and your community safe!

#Changemaker of the Week: Sen. Carol Alvarado

Last week, Senator Carol Alvarado took a courageous stand against the voter suppression bill, S.B. 1, in the Texas Senate. Literally standing on the floor— with no breaks, food, or water— for 15 hours, she was the third woman and first Latina to ever engage in a filibuster to run out the clock on a bad bill. Even breaking our founder, Wendy Davis' record for longest filibuster in the Texas Senate, we know that when women take a stand it creates a ripple effect by showing us what is possible.

Thank you Sen. Alvarado for your work and commitment to standing up for the rights of all Texans!

We see you, Changemaker! 👏

Deeds Not Words is galvanizing the power of young Texans across the state, training the next generation of women leaders, and creating an impact through our legislative work. Your support allows us to continue pursuing our mission of a more equitable future!
