Next Steps: #ChangeMakers Needed!

May 4, 2017

Texas student advocates,

We understand UT has had a rough week in campus safety and hope you're all engaging in much needed self-care.

If you're ready to harness that pain and use it to build safer campuses for students like yourselves in the future: look no further.

HB 3818 is the House companion to SB 970, Senator Watson's bill that many of you had advocated for prior to its shift in focus to address other issues related to sexual assault besides affirmative consent.

This House Bill 3818, carried by Representative Donna Howard, gives us a second chance at defining affirmative consent at institutions across Texas!

What can you do?

HB 3818 was just referred to the House Committee on Higher Education but has not been assigned a hearing!

That means there are 2 sets of calls we need to make:

Call 1

  • Who? The committee clerk Grady Dahlberg
  • What? Ask them to schedule a hearing on this important bill
  • When? Now
  • Where? (512) 463-0782

Call 2

  • Who? The members of the House Committee on Education
    • Rep Lozano (512) 463-0463
    • Rep Raney (512) 463-0698
    • Rep Alonzo (512) 463-0408
    • Rep Alvarado (512) 463-0732
    • Rep Chen Button (512) 463-0486
    • Rep Clardy (512) 463-0592
    • Rep Morrison (512) 463-0456
    • Rep Turner (512) 463-0374
  • What? Ask them to support this important piece of legislation when it comes to their vote
  • When? Now
  • Where? Direct lines listed above

So host a calling party, commit to 9 quick calls to procrastinate studying for that next exam, make your voice heard! And be ready to show up once this bill is scheduled a hearing.

Thank you, our brave advocates,

Alicia, Wendy and the Deeds Not Words team
