The Newsletter of the Deeds Not Words Community

February 27, 2020 | Deeds Digest No. 158
The Deeds Digest is your bi-weekly look into the latest news from Deeds Not Words and what's making us inspired, angry, and ready to change the world. đŸŒ

Hey, #Changemakers!

Storytelling is an important part of the work we do. From testifying at the State Capitol to making a speech at a rally on National Period Day, the foundation of how we advocate for the issues we care about starts with a story.

That said, we have some exciting news on the digital front of Deeds: We will be launching our new web series, Deeds Debunks TOMORROW on our Facebook page

‘Deeds Debunks’ will explore the topics that matter to YOUth and debunking the myths within those topics. For our first episode, we’ll be talking about all things voting and civic engagement ahead of the March primary!

Make sure that you’ve liked our Facebook page so you can be one of the first supporters to watch the premiere of Deeds Debunks. We can’t wait to see where this adventure goes!

In solidarity,

Sydney Greene

It’s been a busy last few weeks at Deeds Not Words! At the end of January, we onboarded our Spring 2020 Campus Organizers! Our youth advocates learned everything from how to turn out voters and organize locally to the Census and how art and activism intertwine, and now our organizers are now ready to tackle the issues in their communities head-on. We are so proud of these students for their leadership and hard work in their communities. đŸ’Ș💜

Last weekend, we headed to Corpus Christi for our 5th Movement Mujeres gathering, where our fellows explored policy deep dives around sexual harassment and violence in the workplace and how to advocate for reproductive justice in the workplace. Time has flown by fast, and this powerful group of women is already more than halfway through the fellowship program! It’s inspiring to see the ways they are transforming the image of leadership in Texas and uplifting each other. đŸ‘đŸŒđŸ‘đŸœđŸ‘đŸż

Youth Climate Strikers In Rural Areas Are Protesting Alone

Young people around the world are following Greta Thunberg’s example and going on strike. In isolated areas, some youth activists are doing so by themselves, the only ones on the front lines, fighting for the future that younger generations might not see.

“Being a climate activist in Uganda is very hard,” said Mulindwa Moses, a 23-year-old Ugandan climate activist. “You cannot hold a strike with large numbers to create awareness because the government [does not] allow it, and I have lost friends, who say they can no longer associate with me because I stand on the side of roads holding signs and spend most of my time planting trees.”

We stand with the solo youth climate strikers around the world who are standing up for what they believe in — even if that means standing up on their own. We see you, Changemakers!

Here’s what’s also inspiring us:

“Sanctuary Cities For The Unborn” Aren’t Enforceable. But Patients Don’t Know That.

Cities in Utah, New Mexico, and yes — Texas — have passed a series of local legislation making their towns “sanctuary cities” for the unborn, causing confusion among many people who live in those towns about whether abortion is legal or not.

News flash — Roe v. Wade is still legal, which means everyone’s right to get an abortion still stands. Local bans, like the ones in Texas, are trying to chip away at Roe, but organizations within the Trust Respect Access Coalition — including Deeds — are fighting to make sure that people in these towns know they have every right to get an abortion.

Our friends at the Lilith Fund and the Texas Equal Access Fund are joining forces with the ACLU in suing 7 Texas counties for their attempt to block Texans’ access to information about their rights and abortion care. Last summer, anti-abortion extremists brought a wave of unconstitutional and malicious anti-abortion ordinances to several East Texas towns.

Read more about the lawsuit and what we’re fighting against here.

Here's what's also making us angry:

Hey Changemaker! There’s just ONE DAY left of early voting ahead of the March 3rd primary! Right now, young people across Texas (like us!) are gearing up to head to the polls and make their voices heard as the most diverse voting block of the electorate.

Please make sure to head to the polls if you haven’t already, and bring a friend! Find out what's on the ballot, your closest polling place, and more at govotetexas.org.

#Changemaker of the Week:
Bianca Castro and Yamilee Gonzalez

Our Changemaker of the Week goes out to two of our Campus Organizers, Bianca Castro of UT-RGV Edinburg and Yamilee Gonzalez of UT-RGV Brownsville, who were some of the youth voices involved in the anti-endorsement campaign of Senator Eddie Lucio Jr. Here’s what our youth advocates had to say:

“Senator Eddie Lucio has been a part of the Texas Senate for three decades, serving long before we were born. Throughout his time as a representative, he has consistently advocated for issues that actively hurt the same community he vows to represent. Time and time again, Lucio has firmly stood against women and the LGBTQ+ community by voting against abortion access and in-favor of transphobic bills that harm our communities.”

You can read more of Bianca and Yamilee’s powerful statement here. We see you, Changemakers!

As a loyal subscriber of the Deeds Digest, we want to make sure you saw this news:

Thanks to a generous donor, all gifts made to Deeds Not Words during Amplify Austin will be doubled up to $1,500! And even better — You can lock-in your gift now ahead of Amplify Austin by giving today!

We’re a small, but mighty organization and $1,500 helps youth in our student chapters across Texas to get out the vote ahead of the March primaries. We can’t overstate how important 2020 will be for us to reach voters, inform our communities, and push for progressive change in Texas.

We invite you to make a contribution to support the work our Changemakers will embark on in 2020.
