The Newsletter of the Deeds Not Words Community

March 27, 2020 | Deeds Digest No. 160
The Deeds Digest is your bi-weekly look into the latest news from Deeds Not Words and what's making us inspired, angry, and ready to change the world. đźŚŤ

Sydney,

There's no doubt about it: there’s a lot of uncertainty and anxiety happening in communities across the world right now. Over the past several weeks, we’ve seen a pandemic sweep across the world and impact our very own communities, loved ones, and our very own lives. What we’re going through is unlike anything many of us have seen in our lifetimes.

The spread of COVID-19 has shown us one thing: Our systems are broken. Systems that are supposed to protect our most vulnerable, including the elderly, incarcerated, undocumented and unhoused, have faltered, leaving people struggling and suffering at this time. Right now, we need to practice global solidarity by confronting this crisis head-on and protecting the lives of those around us by limiting the spread of this disease as much as possible. It’s also time to hold our elected leaders accountable and push for progressive policies, like paid sick leave for people to stay home with their families, accessible and affordable healthcare for sick people, the protection of worker's rights for those on the frontlines in hospitals and homes, and more. We elected these officials so they can protect our communities, even in the most difficult of times, and we must ensure that they are fulfilling the duties of their jobs.

We’re uncertain of when this crisis will end, but it’s up to us to flatten the curve, by being safe, aware, and treating everyone with kindness and compassion, and working collectively to push through this to reach a better and brighter tomorrow.

Later in the Digest, we’ll share some resources on how you can assist communities across the country, including our Changemakers, who are impacted the most during this pandemic. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and if you have any questions for Team Deeds, please feel free to reach out to either of us.

Thank you for your support and stay safe,

Claudia & Amber

As the developments of COVID-19 rapidly continue, Deeds Not Words is committed to ensuring the safety of our youth advocates and Deeds staff. After monitoring the guidance from state and federal officials, we have decided to make several changes to our internal and external operations in order to stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic:

  • All Deeds staff have been mandated to work remotely from now until further notice.

  • Our Campus Organizers, Interns, Artist In Residence, and the Census Ambassador will continue to be paid their monthly stipend through the end of their program.

  • The on-the-ground organizing for our Campus Organizer program has been put on hold temporarily due to school closures and health concerns. We are currently working to shift our strategy from on-the-ground organizing to digital work. We will send updates on what you can expect to see from our Campus Organizers online.

P.S. We had our first board meeting yesterday! We're going through difficult times, but it's great to have a team who's right behind us to support our work. Thanks, y'all!

This week, we’re inspired by our Changemakers at the UT-Dallas Deeds chapter, who a couple of weeks ago, organized a counter-protest against an anti-choice group that was pushing dangerous rhetoric towards students on campus. The Deeds chapter made their voices heard and let other students know that abortion is okay — and nobody should be shamed or stigmatized for making a choice about their own body. Amazing job @utd_deeds! 💜

Here’s what’s also inspiring us:

Earlier this week, in response to COVID-19, Governor Abbott ordered a stop on all “all medically unnecessary surgeries and procedures” and guess what: GOP lawmakers are trying to include abortion clinics under this order. Yep, you read that right. In the midst of a public health emergency, anti-choice extremists are using abortion access as a political pawn, rather than helping the most vulnerable Texans who are struggling physically, emotionally, and financially during this pandemic — and their actions are incredibly shameful to witness.

We firmly believe that abortion is essential healthcare — and all patients accessing abortion care deserve their care without delay, especially during a public health crisis.

P.S. Our friends at Planned Parenthood and other Texas Abortion Providers filed an emergency lawsuit on Wednesday to keep abortion procedures available during the coronavirus. We proudly stand with you all in this fight!

Here's what's also making us angry:

The “Be The Change” is pretty obvious this week. Across our state, our country, and the world, people are experiencing threats to their health, financial security, and emotional and mental well-being — and now is the time for solidarity. We’ve seen a wave of support and networks joining forces to help the most vulnerable in their communities, and we want to make sure that wave continues through this difficult time, and long after this is all over. We’ve pulled together a list of resources you can look into if you’re either looking to support communities or find support yourself.

If there are any other resources you’d like to share, please send them over to hello@deedsnotwords.com

#Changemaker of the Week:
Deeds Not Words Campus Organizers

Our Changemaker of the Week goes out to all of our Campus Organizers, who have faced a lot of changes in the last couple of weeks due to the coronavirus. Graduations have been canceled or postponed, students have had to rush to move off-campus, jobs have been lost, and more. It hasn’t been easy for our Campus Organizers, but we are in awe of their resilience and desire to continue to push for change, even if they’re not on campus. As we’re shifting our organizing goals, we’ve seen creativity, excitement, and a willingness to learn about how to become digital organizers during this time. We have a group of smart, strong, and dedicated youth advocates and we’re proud to stand with you all.

We see you, Changemakers!

As a youth-led, youth-powered organization, Deeds Not Words is continuing to honor our commitment to supporting our youth — but Deeds is a small organization and we want to make sure that we can continue to pay our Campus Organizers, Interns, Artist in Residence, and Census Ambassador for the hard work they’ll continue to do for the rest of the semester.

Right now, our youth advocates need to know that in this anxious and uncertain time, supporters like you are standing behind them. We’d appreciate your support to sustain our programming as we work to transition our methods and strategy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
