I am a UT student and I was deeply affected by the results of the Chase Cohort study, a survey that published data about sexual assault on UTs campus. This survey, while deeply unsettling, opened my eyes to how many students have experienced traumatic events on campus. I recently learned that Betsy DeVos will likely propose changes to Title IX that will give institutions more power over results of studies like this. For me personally, I would feel deeply uncomfortable if I knew that the University of Texas, an institution that receives scrutiny based on results like this, had control over what information about sexual violence was presented to us. Having a 3rd party, one with unbiased intentions, conduct surveys and collect data while protecting the rights of survivors is more ethical than allowing large institutions to control data. In anticipation of these dangerous #TitleIX attacks, we asked our students how THEY would like to see sexual assault addressed on their campuses.DeVoss proposed regulations will punish survivors, give greater coverage to predators, and allow schools to skirt their responsibility of providing a safe campus to all students.
